Taking my Laundry room back, a laundry room makeover

Our laundry room had kind of became a:
'catch all the extra stuff room'...
and I decided it was time get it back in order as The Laundry Room.
So it was time for a Laundry room makeover, indeed!

I had attempted to get it more organized, and add extra storage into this room on a few different occasions.  My previous attempt I added a skinny tall shelf  behind the door to use for extra shoe storage etc., which worked for a little while.. but when I examined the room this time around I realized most of the junk  uh.. contents ending up on the shelf didn’t belong in the room, and could go to the garage etc...

So out goes the shelf, and almost all the stuff that was on it!

I changed that space by adding a wooden coat rack which I painted to match the wall, and a tray for boots/shoes on the floor underneath it.

The back of the door organizer stayed, I just went through it and got rid of the stuff that didn’t belong or was no longer needed.   It holds our winter hats/gloves, an extra dog leash etc..
(You can find out more about the Organizer HERE)

The other side of the room has a basic wire shelf for storage above the washer/dryer,
which had basically became a hanging rack for plastic bags and spray bottles..

So I cleaned off the shelf completely and then added a small wood shelf underneath.
However, I didn’t actually extend it all the way to the other wall...  I wanted to keep my plastic bags in their place after all. :0)

Instead of storing plastic bags inside of more plastic bags, crammed amongst other plastic bags... I downsized the massive amount, and used a freebie business tote that we had gotten who knows when, once upon a time ago to hold them.. and I just turned it so the business logo is toward the wall. (sneaky huh?)

Here is a closer picture of our designated spot for the loose change that gets discovered while
washing/drying clothes
It is just an empty pickle jar that I added some zebra print duck tape around and a chalkboard label.

I decided to pretty the shelves up a bit.. so I just cut some fabric and used upholstery nails to tack it onto the new wood shelf, this way it would drape down and hide the plug-ins/water lines and such.

Then I added a piece of fabric onto the top shelf to overhang just enough to sort of camo the ugly wire shelf a little, and also to tie the 2 shelves together a little more.  I also changed out the valance
above the window to a solid navy.

I placed my small ironing board on the wall beside the washing machine so it would be near the iron. (maybe someday I will use them)  :0)

All in all this project cost me zero, because I used items I had on hand.

It is so much nicer & neater in this small space, and strangely enough it actually feels bigger.

Plus as a bonus it has given us an extra spot for winter coats/boots that is out of the way.. Which is really nice because we don’t have a coat closet near the entry.

Her is another peek at the before/after...

and the other side:

I would like to eventually put in cabinets instead of the shelving.  So I would call this room
a work in progress.
However, I am really pleased with this spur of the moment, time to get this room back into shape no cost project, and how it turned out.
Yep, our 'catch all the extra stuff room' finally returned to our Laundry room.  :0)

and now it is time to put it to work..  To Do List #1). Laundry!

So do you have a room that seems to have become the 'catch all room' in your house?

  1. Looks great Tina and very functional. I did this in my laundry room earlier this year and it was so much better! The small shelf was a great idea for extra storage! I too hope to eventually put cabinets above my washer and dryer. Have a blessed week....Vicky

  2. Love this! We will need to apply some of this to our laundry room, too (which is also a catch-all room). I LOVE the zebra and chalk board label on the change jar. Perfect little details.
