Kitchen Update - Faux Barn Wood Backsplash

I have been slowly working on my kitchen and decided I wanted a weathered
barn wood look for a back splash.
(You can see my kitchen 'before' tour Here)

I searched for what I wanted but didn't really see anything quite right, and I knew
I wanted something that didn't have a very big thickness to it.
(I didn't want to have to move counter tops/trim etc..)
so I decided to try and 'DIY' it.

Using a piece of handscraped laminate flooring that I had leftover from a flooring project,
I gave it a light sanding to get the sheen off because I wanted paint to stick to it, then I used
different shades of paint and I came up with this:

I basically lightly painted, wiped some paint off, dry brushed some, and wiped off some more
as I went until I achieved this weathered kind of look.

The faux wood grain still shows through in places, and it had the aged look to it
that I was wanting..   and since I was happy with how it turned out,
this project was a go and soon began.

We had to cut the width down to make it work the way I wanted it to as I wanted it to have 3
'boards' to fit up to the cabinets.   Then we also cut them at varying lengths.

I used my brad nailer to place them as I went.
I didn't want to use an adhesive if I didn't have to because I knew it would be easier to remove someday if I didn't.
(or just in case I didn't like it in the end) :0)

I also varied the paint on each board so none of them would match, some are darker,
some lighter, some have a little more red, and some just look more 'worn' than others.

(Can you see in the picture above what looks like a barn?  I love that happy accident)

(this photo makes it look much brighter/more gray than it really is for some reason)

I did put a coat of polycrylic on it for a layer of protection, as well as a couple coats by the sink.   That way if any water or splatters of some sort get on it I can easily wipe it down.
I also used a clear silicone along the bottom just near the sink to be sure no water gets in between it
and the counter top.
So far so good.

(this photo captures it so much better)

We are really loving the new look.

I have been adding a few decorative pieces here and there, like my little windmill I placed in the window,  the red metal tractor I recently picked up, a galvanized 3 tier stand, burlap table runner that I layered with my red buffalo check one,  and of course my farmhouse sign.

This project is slowly coming along but it feels good to have that part of it done.

I am still debating painting my cabinets white, or an almost white shade.
I am also debating what paint color I should go with as the main color.
(although the red on the opposite wall is here to stay a while) :0)

So until I make up my mind on what to tackle next in this room.. we are simply enjoying it.

Thanks for stopping by!

  1. Great job! It really gives your kitchen a fresh look. I kind of like the oak cabinets especially with the white appliances and the new backsplash. :-)

    1. Thank you Debbie, I appreciate that.
I actually like it with the oak cabinets too, more than I thought I would.
I thought I would be ready to paint the cabinets as soon as I got the backsplash done.. but I am not convinced just yet. :0)
      Have a great weekend.

  3. I'm in the process of redoing my kitchen. It's similar to yours. Farmhouse theme. Barn wood back splash. Barn wood 1/2 way up on one wall and the other 1/2 red (A shade darker than yours.) L shaped, same cupboards, dishwasher is on the other side of sink, stove same place. Valance with roosters, mom embroidered for me. Instead of table I got a counter to eat at. Kids are all gone now so just 2 of us now and we have a large dining room. The light is made with a chicken feeder. Your kitchen looks fantastic.
